Chlorhexidine — impurities and related standards
All 3 Chlorhexidine-related compounds in the CATO catalogue, listed with their CAS numbers, molecular formulae and stock status. If the compound you need is not listed, send the structure or the impurity designation and we will check whether it can be synthesised or isolated.
Chlorhexidine is a bisbiguanide antiseptic and disinfectant used in skin antisepsis, oral care products and medical device preparation. Its related-substance profile arises from the condensation chemistry used in its manufacture and from its behaviour in aqueous formulations: partially condensed oligomers and positionally related biguanide species, hydrolysis products, and degradants formed during storage can all be present. Given the aromatic amine chemistry involved, nitrosamine risk assessment may also be relevant to materials of this class. The standards on this page comprise an EP-designated chlorhexidine impurity together with non-compendial impurities, each supplied as a separate characterised lot for identification, purity testing and chromatographic method development.
