Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon monitoring commonly relies on deuterated internal standards, and Benzo[a]Pyrene-d12 is the fully deuterated analogue of benzo[a]pyrene, the five-ring compound widely used as a marker in environmental, food and consumer-product testing. Twelve deuterium atoms give the standard a mass shift sufficient for mass spectrometric discrimination while keeping its chromatographic behaviour close to that of the native analyte, which is what makes it useful for isotope-dilution quantification. Laboratories use it to compensate for losses during extraction and cleanup, to control injection and ionisation variability, and to support validation of GC-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS methods for PAH determination in complex matrices.
